This series contains the formerly classified central subject files of the U.S. Embassy to Saudi Arabia at Jidda. The files typically consist of instructions, despatches, telegrams, memoranda, reports, and other correspondence with the Department of State in Washington; notes to and from the host government; correspondence with the embassies of other nations; telegrams and other correspondence with other United States embassies and consulates; correspondence with private individuals and businesses; and internal memoranda and reports exchanged between embassy officials. Subjects covered may include the internal political, economic, governmental, and social affairs of the host country; the bilateral relations of the United States and the host country; the relations of the host country with its neighbors, international organizations, and other nations; and any subject which embassy officials felt might impact the interests of the United States. The files also may include information on internal operations and organization of the Embassy and Embassy efforts on behalf of United States citizens and businesses. Of particular potential interest within the series are records relating to such subjects as public safety projects; petroleum and defense companies conducting and seeking business in Saudi Arabia and other countries in the region; the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC); the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC); agreements concerning oil trade and production; and Saudi Arabia's relations with Israel and Iran as well as with other Arab and Persian Gulf nations. This series contains documents in Arabic.

The United States established a legation to Saudi Arabia at Jidda on May 1, 1942 and raised it to an Embassy on March 18, 1949. The Embassy was transferred to Riyadh September 26, 1984 with the existing U.S. Liaison Office in Riyadh raised to the rank of Embassy while the Embassy in Jidda (which had since been renamed Jeddah) became a Consulate General....
